How do gender roles create inequality?
Women are at a disadvantage compared to men when it comes to income, but the gender gap has narrowed in recent years due to the gradual equality between men and women, and the government is working to close the income gap.
Firstly, there are many reasons for the gender income gap, including geographic location and the overrepresentation of women in low-paying jobs. In the short term, when the pandemic hits, the gender gap widens because women are more likely to be unemployed in the service sector.
However, in the long term, remote working allows mothers to better combine work and childcare without having to return to the office, which helps increase women’s earnings. Second, women also get paid less than men for the same work. Because companies consider men to be more capable than women, they are willing to pay men more in salary and equity. Finally, the government should take measures to protect women’s income or rights, which reduces the income gap between men and women. Keywords: gender, income, gap
The Role of the Gender Play in Creating Income Inequality
As early as the French Revolution in 1791, feminism drew the curtain with the dawn of this modern society. Olympe de Gouges wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Women and of their Citizens, declaring that women were equal to men in political and other civil rights (Lauren, 2003). In 1893, women began to gain the right to vote. In 1907, Chinese women were granted the legal right to education. In 1978, the percentage of married women employed in the United States exceeded 50%.
More and more women experts, scholars, and even business and political leaders are appearing in every field. In the last 100 years, women’s movements have emerged across the globe, and “gender equality” has become the accepted “political correctness” of most civilized nations around the world.
Therefore, is it relevant for people to discuss economic equality between men and women again as we enter the third decade of the 21st century? Or is economic equality between men and women an issue that has already been addressed?
The Global Gender Gap Report, published annually by the World Economic Forum since 2006, shows that the reality is very different from what people think it will be in 2021. Economic equality, the keystone of women’s equal rights, does not seem to be secure.
The average global female salary is only 40% of that of a male counterpart, and the average global female income (including salary and other side income and investment income) is only 50% of that of a male counterpart (World Economic Forum, 2021). It is a little comforting to see that, in terms of general trends, the income gap between men and women has narrowed significantly in the last thirteen years. But, even if we project the situation in the last thirteen years, it will still take 257 years for the global economic gap between men and women to be eliminated.
