HMS Gambia : A Glorious History In Pictures Conceived in the 1938 Royal Naval Estimates and laid down on the 24th of July 1939, at Swan Hunter’s Yard at Wallsend.

A Fiji-class light cruiser, she was 555 feet long and displaced nearly 9,000 tons.
She sported a maximum speed of over 32 knots, allowing her to keep up with the fleet.
Furthermore, she boasted a range of over 6,000 nautical miles!

HMS Gambia launched on 30th of November 1940. And would serve with New Zealand from 1943-1946.
She saw action throughout the Pacific Theater serving with the British Pacific Fleet.

In conclusion, she was in mothballs in Portsmouth harbor by December of 1060.
Lastly, on December 2nd, 1968 she was towed to the breakyards in Inverkeithing, a port town and parish, in Fife, Scotland.
