
HMS Gambia : A Glorious History In Pictures Conceived in the 1938 Royal Naval Estimates and laid down on the 24th of July 1939, at Swan Hunter’s Yard at Wallsend.

A Fiji-class light cruiser, she was 555 feet long and displaced nearly 9,000 tons.

She sported a maximum speed of over 32 knots, allowing her to keep up with the fleet.

Furthermore, she boasted a range of over 6,000 nautical miles!

HMS Gambia launched on 30th of November 1940. And would serve with New Zealand from 1943-1946.

She saw action throughout the Pacific Theater serving with the British Pacific Fleet.
