Grace Rohloff Obituary
Tragic Fall at Yosemite’s Half Dome
In a tragic incident earlier this month, 20-year-old Grace Rohloff from Arizona slipped and fell to her death while hiking Half Dome in Yosemite National Park with her father, Jonathan Rohloff. The fall occurred during their descent as rain made the trail slick. Grace, a student at Arizona State University and an experienced hiker, had always dreamed of hiking Half Dome. Despite their early start to avoid afternoon storms, the weather turned quickly, leading to the fatal accident. Jonathan is now advocating for improved safety measures at the park.
Incident Details
Grace and her father were nearing the end of their hike on July 13 when rain began to fall, making the trail dangerously slippery. As they navigated the slick conditions, Grace slipped and fell approximately 200 feet. Despite the efforts of first responders, who had to wait out the storm before reaching her, Grace died from a head fracture.
Grace’s Background
Grace was an intelligent and athletic young woman who shared a love of hiking with her father. She had previously hiked the Grand Canyon multiple times and had secured a permit to hike Half Dome through a lottery, fulfilling a long-held dream.
Advocacy for Safety
Following the tragic accident, Jonathan Rohloff is calling for enhanced safety measures at Yosemite National Park to prevent future accidents. He emphasizes that adventure should not equate to danger, noting that at least six people have died on Half Dome in wet conditions over the past two decades.
