CHICAGO – Authorities are searching for a tow truck driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning in Chicago’s South Loop. The crash claimed the life of 21-year-old Giselle Chavez, critically injuring two others, including her sister, Alexandra Chavez, according to the Chicago Police Department and a family GoFundMe page.

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 2:14 a.m. on the 100 block of West Roosevelt Road. Friends of the victims claim the crash was intentional, suggesting it stemmed from harassment by the tow truck driver.

According to witnesses, the victims and their friends had been part of a truck club, cruising around the city before stopping nearby for food. The Chavez sisters and a boyfriend left the group in one car, while others followed in a second vehicle. That’s when an unlicensed red or burgundy tow truck allegedly began harassing them, ramming their vehicles near Roosevelt and Union.

In an attempt to escape, the friends accelerated, but chaos ensued. The sisters’ vehicle lost control, crossed the street, and crashed into a wall, bringing down a light pole. Police say the tow truck driver intentionally backed into an SUV, causing it to strike the victims’ vehicle. The impact led the car to spin out of control and hit the wall, ejecting all three passengers.

The victims were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Giselle Chavez suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead shortly after. Her 20-year-old sister and 19-year-old boyfriend remain hospitalized in critical condition with similar injuries.

“It’s devastating,” said local resident Matthew Bryja. “This is a busy road, and people tend to drive recklessly here.”

Authorities confirmed that video footage of the incident exists and is being used to track down the driver of the tow truck, who fled the scene. The SUV driver involved in the collision stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
