Former Balyasny Portfolio Manager Shane Steinberg Joins North Rock With 900 Million Trading Mandate
According to reporting by Bloomberg’s star reporter Nishant Kumar & Liza Tetley, former Balyasny Asset Management portfolio manager Shane Steinberg joined North Rock Capital last month to run his own trading book with approximately nine hundred million dollars in capital.
Steinberg will focus on technology media and telecommunications equities, a sector that has become a central battleground for alpha generation across large multistrategy hedge funds. The allocation places him among the more heavily backed portfolio managers in the current hiring cycle and signals North Rock’s willingness to deploy significant capital behind experienced talent.
The move comes amid an intensifying war for traders across the hedge fund industry. Large multistrategy platforms are competing aggressively for proven portfolio managers, offering richer compensation structures, higher risk limits, and larger initial capital allocations. For many managers, the appeal also includes the opportunity to incubate strategies internally with a potential path to a future spin out.
North Rock currently manages approximately five point seven billion dollars in assets. The decision to allocate nearly one billion dollars to a single book underscores the firm’s growth ambitions and its confidence in Steinberg’s ability to scale a TMT focused strategy within a competitive multistrategy framework.
Industry observers note that such moves reflect broader shifts in hedge fund labor markets. Talent mobility has increased as firms prioritize speed, specialization, and the ability to deploy capital quickly in volatile markets. For seasoned portfolio managers, the current environment offers leverage rarely seen outside peak hedge fund expansion cycles.
Steinberg’s arrival further highlights how capital concentration and talent competition continue to reshape the multistrategy hedge fund landscape.
