Esther Greizer, a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor, was laid to rest on Monday in Haifa, Israel, surrounded by hundreds of strangers who gathered to honor her memory. Esther, who passed away on Yom HaShoah, left behind no immediate family to mourn her, but her life and resilience touched the hearts of many.

Born in Hungary, Esther’s childhood was marred by the horrors of the Auschwitz death camp, where she endured unspeakable suffering, including deadly medical experiments conducted by Josef Mengele, infamously known as the “Angel of Death.” Despite the trauma she endured, Esther found love and solace in her marriage to her late husband, Gershon.

Tragically, Esther was unable to have children due to the harrowing abuse she suffered at Auschwitz.

Yet, her capacity for love knew no bounds. Her great-nephew, Yochai Gringlick, shared on Facebook how Esther’s home was filled with warmth and affection, despite the absence of biological children. To her family, she was more than an aunt; she was a beacon of love and generosity, treating them as her own grandchildren.

In a poignant plea on social media, Gringlick shared that there would be no traditional shiva for Esther, as she had no living children, and her brothers had all passed away. Instead, he called upon the community to honor her memory by attending her funeral, a request that was met with an overwhelming response.

On the solemn occasion of Yom HaShoah, a day dedicated to remembering the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, Esther’s funeral became a symbol of resilience and solidarity. Hundreds gathered in Haifa to pay their respects to a woman whose life bore witness to the darkest chapter in human history.

Esther Greizer’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. Though she may have left this world without children of her own, Esther’s legacy of love and resilience will continue to inspire generations to come. May her memory be a blessing and may her soul find eternal peace.
