Esmail Qaani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, potentially passed away during Israel’s Beirut bombing campaign. As a result, leaving behind a legacy shaped by years of military service and influence within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Known for his quiet demeanor and strategic mind, Qaani was appointed head of the elite Quds Force in January 2020, following the assassination of his predecessor, General Qassem Soleimani.

Sworn to kill all Americans and Jews. Qaani sat on a number of hit lists for many years.

Born in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad in 1957, Qaani’s military career began during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, where he quickly rose through the ranks of the IRGC. His early involvement in shaping Iran’s regional strategy in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria would define much of his work as a key player in Iran’s military outreach beyond its borders. He spent decades working alongside Soleimani, supporting Tehran’s efforts to extend its influence across the Middle East, and was considered one of the architects of Iran’s strategic alliances in the region.

Despite becoming less publicly visible than Soleimani. However, Qaani maintained a steadfast loyalty to the ideals of the Islamic Revolution, promoting Iran’s geopolitical objectives with determination and tactical precision. His leadership of the Quds Force, which is responsible for Iran’s extraterritorial operations, saw a continuation of policies aimed at supporting regional allies and maintaining Iran’s influence, particularly through the defense of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the empowerment of Shia militias in Iraq.

Qaani’s passing marks the end of an era for the Quds Force, which he led during a tumultuous period of heightened tensions with the United States, the ongoing civil war in Syria, and the complex conflict in Yemen.
