Edward Mitby Portfolio Manager TCW Group

QuantVision 2026: Fordham’s Quantitative Conference

Edward Mitby is a highly accomplished artificial intelligence engineer, quantitative portfolio manager, and machine learning expert with deep experience applying advanced AI techniques to systematic investing, macro strategy, and financial markets. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, he has established himself as a leader at the intersection of quantitative finance and next generation artificial intelligence, combining rigorous academic training from Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard with hands on leadership roles at top asset management firms including The TCW Group, Vanguard, VanEck, and Coffee Point Capital Advisors.
Mitby most recently served as Portfolio Manager and Senior Vice President in the Quantitative Research Group at The TCW Group, where he led systematic macro strategy development, quantitative multi asset allocation, and alpha generation initiatives. His work focused on building production ready machine learning models, prototyping AI driven investment strategies, and contributing to firmwide AI governance and implementation. He played a key role in integrating artificial intelligence into the investment process, helping translate cutting edge machine learning techniques into practical portfolio applications.
Prior to TCW, Mitby was a Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer in Quantitative Equity Research at Vanguard. There, he developed deep learning models to generate systematic equity factor strategies and applied machine learning to time series modeling, financial data analytics, and predictive alpha generation. His work included advanced explainable AI techniques such as Shapley value analysis, helping improve transparency and interpretability in complex machine learning driven investment models.
Earlier in his career, Mitby served as Portfolio Manager and Quantitative Researcher at Coffee Point Capital Advisors, where he focused on macro correlation trading and built quantitative investment systems using Python and cloud computing infrastructure including AWS. He also spent over five years at VanEck as a Senior Industrials, Energy, and Infrastructure Analyst, where he developed expertise in global equity markets, sector analysis, and fundamental investment research.
Mitby’s academic background is equally distinguished. He holds a Master of Science in Operations Research from Stanford University’s School of Engineering, where his research included dynamic programming optimization, real options valuation, and advanced computational modeling. He also earned a Professional Certificate in Artificial Intelligence from Stanford’s Department of Computer Science, completing advanced coursework in generative AI, reinforcement learning, and machine learning applications. His capstone research focused on tactical investing using reinforcement learning, which he implemented in Python. In addition, he holds a Master of Science in Financial Engineering from Columbia University, where he conducted advanced quantitative analysis of global equity markets and numerical solutions to financial partial differential equations. He earned his undergraduate degree cum laude from Harvard University.
Mitby holds professional certifications including Microsoft Certified Azure AI Fundamentals and AWS Certified AI Practitioner. He has deep technical expertise across modern AI platforms and tools, including large language models such as Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot. His work spans prompt engineering, agentic AI system design, generative AI prototyping, explainable AI, and applied machine learning for financial decision making.
His career reflects a rare combination of academic rigor, engineering expertise, and real world investment leadership. As artificial intelligence continues to transform financial markets, Edward Mitby stands among the leading practitioners applying machine learning, generative AI, and quantitative research to the future of investing.
