Minister Among Seven Killed in Ferry Dock Collapse on Georgia’s Sapelo Island
SAPELO ISLAND, GA — Dr. Charles Houston, a well-respected minister and chaplain for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), was identified as one of the seven people killed Saturday afternoon when a ferry dock collapsed during an event on Sapelo Island. The gathering was held for descendants of Georgia’s slave trade.
The tragic incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when an aluminum gangway collapsed, sending Houston and at least 20 others into the water.
Dr. Houston had served as a chaplain with the DNR since 2008 and had been an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church for 40 years, according to his wife, Elizabeth Houston. His decades of service and dedication to both his ministry and the DNR have left a lasting impact on the communities he served.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse as the community mourns the loss of Houston and the other victims.
