Heraclitus painted as the weeping philosopher by Johannes Moreelse c. 1630

Did Heraclitus say to be even minded is the greatest virtue?

No evidence exists! Heraclitus, a pre-Socratic philosopher from ancient Greece. Moreover, known for his aphoristic style of writing, in which he expressed his views on a wide range of topics in short, pithy statements.

However, Heraclitus emphasized the importance of balance and moderation in one’s life. And this idea, often becomes associated with the concept. For example, Heraclitus famously said, “The way up and the way down are one and the same.” Which can become interpreted as a call to maintain balance and equanimity in the face of life’s ups and downs. He also wrote, “Opposites are necessary for life, but… unified in a single system and reconciled through a process of constant change.”

Which suggests the need to accept and integrate opposing forces in one’s life.

Therefore, while Heraclitus did not explicitly state that becoming even-minded is the greatest virtue. Lastly, his emphasis on balance and moderation in life is consistent with the idea that cultivating a sense of equanimity can lead to greater well-being and fulfillment.
