David Pizzo, Esteemed Leader and Compassionate Community Advocate, Passes at 64

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of David Pizzo, the West Florida Market President for Florida Blue, who left us on Friday at the age of 64. David had been courageously battling pancreatic cancer over the past year, a fight he undertook in private as shared by his family on the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network website.

David’s journey in healthcare leadership was marked by dedication and a visionary approach. His tenure as the market president of Florida Blue was characterized by his commitment to solving critical healthcare issues and policy challenges. Just last week, he expressed his enthusiasm for collaborative efforts in healthcare during the “Business of Healthcare Summit” at Florida State University.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, David’s personal contributions to the community were profound and far-reaching. He was a vital force in local economic development, having served as the 2013 chairman of the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council. Craig J. Richard, CEO of the Council, reflected on David’s pivotal role in shaping the economic landscape of Tampa Bay.

David’s community involvement extended to numerous organizations. He played a significant role in raising $1 million for GTE Financial’s scholarship program. Brian Best, President and CEO of GTE Financial, attested to David’s unwavering commitment to volunteerism, highlighting his impactful role in the student scholarship program.

Moreover, in his personal life, David became cherished for his kindness and compassion. His son, Chris Pizzo, founding partner of Druid Ventures, shared a heartfelt tribute on LinkedIn, celebrating David as the nicest and most caring person he had ever met.

Despite his health challenges, David continued to contribute his expertise. In addition, energy to the community. He recently joined the Tampa Medical and Research District Advisory Committee of Tampa General Hospital. Thus, aiming to enhance the city’s life-science presence.

David’s educational background included a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and an MBA from New York University. His career spanned over two decades with Florida Blue, preceded by an eight-year tenure at Ogilvy CommonHealth.

Remembered as a community leader and a beloved friend, David’s life was a testament to his passion for his family, his work, and his community. Futhermore, Pat Geraghty, President and CEO of GuideWell and Florida Blue, reflected on David’s vibrant life, his welcoming nature. Additionally, the profound impact he made on those around him.

David’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the positive changes he fostered in the community. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. David Pizzo will become dearly missed. However, his spirited dedication to life and community will continue to inspire us all.
