Origin and Evolution: The Story of Walsh University

Initially known as LaMennais College in Alfred, Maine, established in 1951, Walsh University began its journey with the objective of training young men for religious and educational vocations. In 1957, discussions between Brother Robert A. Francoeur and Monsignor William Hughes led to the relocation of the college to Canton, Ohio, prompted by an invitation from Bishop Emmet M. Walsh. With a generous donation from Bishop Walsh, the university commenced its Ohio chapter.

The university, initially launched on a 50-acre farmland, began with two buildings, which have played crucial roles in its development. The involvement of the Brothers of Christian Instruction was not just foundational but ongoing, with several serving in faculty and presidential roles. This transformative journey led to the college’s elevation to university status in 1993 and its entry into Division II of the NCAA in 2013.
