The university’s origins date back to 1795 when it was established as “Kitenkan,” a branch school of the Shoheizaka-School of the Tokugawa Government, which later became the University of Tokyo. Following the Meiji Restoration, it was transformed into the Normal School of Yamanashi.

In the early 20th century, the institution expanded with the establishment of the Normal School of Yamanashi for Junior in 1921 and the Yamanashi High School of Engineering in 1924. Post-World War II, these three schools were merged into the University of Yamanashi under Japan’s new school system. In 1978, Yamanashi Medical University was founded, becoming the sole medical university in the Yamanashi Prefecture. The current University of Yamanashi was established in 2002 through the merger of the former University of Yamanashi and Yamanashi Medical University, formally known as the National University Corporation University of Yamanashi.
