University of West Georgia

The University of West Georgia (UWG) is a public university situated in Carrollton, Georgia. It also operates a satellite campus in Newnan, Georgia, offers selected classes at the Douglasville Center, and provides off-campus Museum Studies classes at the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As of Fall 2023, UWG had an enrollment of 12,769 students, which includes 8,454 undergraduates and 4,315 graduate students. UWG is one of four comprehensive universities within the University System of Georgia.

Historical Overview

In 1906, the decision to establish the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School was made to create a more practical educational program for rural youth aged 13 to 21. The Bonner plantation was selected as the school’s location.

John H. Melson was appointed as the first principal of the school, serving from 1908 to 1920. Along with his wife Penelope, who started the school’s library, Melson worked closely with students to improve the institution. Penelope’s efforts included a “book shower” in 1908 that added over 300 manuscripts to the library.

In 1920, Irvine S. Ingram succeeded Melson as the principal and later became the first president when the school’s name changed to West Georgia College in 1933 and it became a two-year institution. Ingram, who served until 1960, was key in advancing adult education and summer programs for teachers. He also helped secure a $250,000 grant from the Rosenwald Foundation, which was used to expand the college’s facilities and programs.

James E. Boyd took over as president in 1961, notable for integrating the campus in 1963 by inviting Lillian Williams, who later earned two degrees in education and the Founder’s Award in 1985. Boyd expanded the college significantly, increasing student enrollment and academic programs. By 1970, he was named Georgia’s first vice chancellor for academic development.

Desegregation and Academic Development

Before 1963, UWG did not admit African-American students. President Boyd ended this practice by admitting Lillian Williams. In 2002, President Sethna apologized to the Carver High School class of 1955, whose applications had been denied based on race. A scholarship fund was established for the descendants of these students, along with a scholarship in Williams’ name for mothers pursuing education.

Academic Offerings

UWG offers a variety of programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels through its multiple colleges, including the Richards College of Business, Tanner Health System School of Nursing, College of Education, and others. The university also provides certificate and specialist programs for educators. UWG is one of the few universities in the U.S. offering a psychology program with a focus on humanistic and transpersonal psychology.

Campus and Student Life

Students at UWG have access to 150 organizations covering a wide range of interests, including academics, culture, politics, religion, and sports. The campus includes various amenities such as a library, gym, computer labs, sports fields, a nature trail, and a climbing wall. UWG also has a marching band known for its energetic performances.

Greek Village at UWG provides housing for fraternity and sorority members, complete with modern facilities and communal spaces. The Greek system at UWG includes Panhellenic, Interfraternity, and National Pan-Hellenic councils.

Recent Developments

In 2019, UWG faced controversy over non-renewal notices sent to several tenure-track faculty members, leading to student protests. Despite these challenges, the university continues to offer diverse academic programs and extracurricular activities to enrich student life.
