The inception of the University of Algarve on January 16, 1979, marked by a parliamentary vote, signified the merging of two former institutions: the University of Algarve and the Polytechnic Institute of Faro. This unique formation underlines its distinction from traditional universities, integrating both university faculties and polytechnic schools. The university’s establishment by legislative act is also a notable characteristic. The appointment of its first rector, Gomes Guerreiro, occurred in 1982, succeeded by several others leading up to Paulo Águas. The university’s governance structure was solidified with the approval of its statutes by the Ministry of Education in 1991, following the enactment of the Universities Autonomy Law. Since its establishment, UAlg has experienced substantial growth in student numbers, infrastructure, and program diversity. A notable addition was the opening of the medical school in 2009, welcoming 32 students.

UAlg offers a wide range of academic programs, with over 40 undergraduate and 68 postgraduate programs, including around 52 Master’s and 16 PhD courses. The university’s faculty and research staff, approximately 700 in number, are actively involved in various research projects and intellectual property development. This research environment is further enriched by over 120 fellowship recipients focusing on research, development, and innovation, and a business incubator that supports start-up ventures.

The university’s vibrant student life is epitomized by the University of Algarve Student Union (AAUAlg), founded on October 1, 1997. This body consolidated six previously independent student associations. The Student Union, in collaboration with the university, oversees a plethora of cultural and sports activities, ranging from performing arts like theater and radio broadcasting to diverse sports disciplines. These include both recreational activities, such as yoga, tai chi, and dance, and competitive sports like basketball, volleyball, and rugby, with several teams participating in district championships. The AAUAlg also fosters an esports department and organizes major events like the Academic Week, Sports Festival, Snow Campus, Sports Exchange Programme, and various tournaments under the Academic University Sports Federation.
