Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST)
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST; Korean: 울산과학기술원) is one of South Korea’s premier public universities dedicated to research in science and technology. Alongside KAIST, GIST, and DGIST, UNIST stands as a beacon of scientific advancement. Established in 2007 in Ulsan, a city renowned for its industrial prowess, UNIST was founded to meet the increasing demand for higher education in an area known for automotive (Hyundai Motor), shipbuilding (Hyundai Heavy Industries), petrochemical (SK Energy), and secondary cells industries. UNIST is notable for being the first national university in South Korea to be incorporated, administered by an independent board of trustees, despite being funded by the central government.
History

Ulsan, with a population exceeding 1.1 million and the highest GDP per capita in South Korea, previously had only one university, the University of Ulsan. Recognizing the need for more educational institutions, former President Roh Moo-hyun included the establishment of a national university in Ulsan as part of his campaign platform. Discussions began three years into his presidency, along with the construction of Ulsan Station for high-speed rail. The campus location was finalized in 2006, and Moo Je Cho was appointed as the first president in 2007. UNIST aimed to specialize in science and technology to foster collaboration between researchers and local industries, akin to the synergy seen between Stanford University and Silicon Valley or KAIST and Daedeok Innopolis.
UNIST officially began with the passage of the UNIST bill in 2007 and welcomed its first class of undergraduates in 2009. In March 2015, a new bill recognized UNIST as one of the four nationally funded research institutes in Korea, enhancing its focus on graduate education and granting PhD students exemptions from the alternative military service examination.

On May 12, 2019, UNIST celebrated its 10th anniversary with a day-long ceremony attended by notable figures such as National Assembly members and the Ulju County mayor. The event included an open concert sponsored by KBS and BNK Kyongnam Bank, attended by approximately 7,000 people.
