South Carolina State University

South Carolina State University

Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, the public, land-grant institution known as South Carolina State University is distinguished as the state’s sole public historically black university. It’s a part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Origins and Historical Development

Dukes Gym

The roots of the university can be traced back to 1872 with the establishment of the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute under the 1862 Land Grant Act, initially a part of Claflin College. In 1896, it evolved into a separate entity named the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina, a title it retained until 1954.

Era of Expansion: 1920s to 1950s

The university expanded its academic offerings as its student body grew. However, the Great Depression necessitated the closure of certain programs. New Deal Programs facilitated the construction of important buildings like Wilkinson Hall. Post-World War II, the influx of students created a classroom shortage, addressed partially by establishing an ROTC detachment in 1947. In 1954, the institution was renamed South Carolina State College, receiving significant funding for new facilities, partly driven by the “separate but equal” educational ethos of that era.

Civil Rights Movement and Growth: 1960s to 1980s

The 1960s were marked by student activism in the Civil Rights Movement, culminating in the 1968 Orangeburg massacre. Following this, under the leadership of M. Maceo Nance, the campus saw considerable development, including the establishment of the I.P. Stanback Museum & Planetarium.

Recent History and Expansion: 1990s to Present

Gaining university status in 1992, the campus continued to evolve with new construction and renovations under various leaderships. Notably, President Joe Biden delivered a commencement address here in 2021.
