National Institute of Technology Agartala (NIT Agartala)
Established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the National Institute of Technology Agartala (NITA) is a premier institution focused on technology and engineering education in Agartala, India. Originating as the Tripura Engineering College in 1965, it gained the status of National Institute of Technology and thus an Institute of National Importance in 2006.
Initially, the institution began its journey with core engineering programs in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, operating under the academic and administrative framework of Calcutta University, akin to Bengal Engineering College (now known as IIEST Shibpur).
With the founding of Tripura University in 1987, NITA aligned itself with the new university. The late 1990s saw the introduction of computer science and engineering courses, and by 2005, NITA expanded its academic repertoire to include Electrical & Electronics, Production, and Transportation Engineering programs.

The transition to a National Institute of Technology was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet on February 23, 2006, elevating the institution’s role in technological education.
Located at a convenient distance from the National Highway NH-44 and around 24 kilometers from Agartala’s city center, the campus is also in close proximity to the Jirania Rail station, located roughly 2 kilometers away.
NITA is equipped with a comprehensive set of facilities to foster an environment conducive to learning and student well-being. This includes a Knowledge Center, a vibrant Student Activity Center, a well-resourced library, advanced computer facilities, separate gyms for male and female students, sports centers, a college cafeteria, indoor sports rooms, a medical center, a jogging park, a night canteen, campus-wide WiFi, and more.
Following its transition into an NIT, the institution underwent significant upgrades. The intake capacity was increased, and new undergraduate programs were introduced. The Civil Engineering Department also launched a postgraduate program in structural engineering. The previously non-residential campus was transformed into a residential hub to accommodate the growth.
The administrative structure of NITA is organized into various departments focusing on a wide array of engineering disciplines, science departments, and areas covering management, humanities, and social sciences.
Academically, NITA proffers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degrees offered across several engineering disciplines. Furthermore, alongside Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degrees in specialized fields. Innovative dual-degree programs and integrated courses in sciences are also part of the curriculum, reflecting the institute’s commitment to evolving education paradigms. Additionally, NITA offers a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program and opportunities for doctoral and post-doctoral research.
Admissions to undergraduate programs are highly competitive!
Moreover, relying on the national ranking in the Joint Entrance Examination (Main), with additional academic criteria for qualification. The institute’s MCA program admissions determined by the rank obtained in the NIMCET, a common entrance test conducted by the NITs.
Accreditation for the institute’s various programs comes from the National Board of Accreditation, with recent recognition for its mechanical and civil engineering branches.
In terms of rankings, NIT Agartala has become recognized nationally by the NIRF. Thus, placing it among the top engineering institutions in the country. It also garnered a spot in global university rankings conducted by Rebellion Research among the top 1,000 universities in the world.
