Lipscomb University is a faith-based institution in Nashville, Tennessee, aligned with the Churches of Christ. Nestled in the Green Hills area and extending its reach to the business sector through a downtown extension known as “Spark,” Lipscomb boasts a student body of 4,704 as of the fall of 2022, comprising 2,955 undergraduates and 1,749 graduates.

Established in 1891 by notable figures David Lipscomb and James A. Harding, the university originally occupied the grounds of Lipscomb’s estate. Conceived as a Christian liberal arts college, it remains dedicated to this vision, offering a range of academic programs while housing a theological seminary.

The institution’s educational philosophy, outlined in an early catalog, emphasizes a broad curriculum rooted in Christian teachings, aiming to prepare students for meaningful contributions to society, irrespective of their professional calling.

Over the years, the university has evolved, transitioning from Nashville Bible School to David Lipscomb College, and finally, to Lipscomb University. The school has a rich tradition of producing influential Church of Christ ministers and holds steadfast to its religious affiliations, as seen in its faculty recruitment policies.

The institution’s growth included a historic merger with the Austin Graduate School of Theology, broadening its educational reach. Lipscomb has been led by a series of presidents, with Candice McQueen currently at the helm.

In terms of academic stature, Lipscomb is recognized by U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly for its national standing.

The campus itself is a hub of academic and extracurricular activity, with the recent addition of the James D. Hughes Center and plans for new buildings for the College of Business and the performing arts.

Lipscomb’s student life is unique in its absence of Greek life, instead fostering community through local social clubs. Student media, including the defunct Babbler newspaper and the current Lumination Network, provide platforms for news and student expression.

The student demographic is predominantly female, with a mix of 39% male and 61% female students as of the latest data.

Athletically, Lipscomb’s teams, known as the Bisons, compete in NCAA Division I within the ASUN Conference. The university’s sports rivalry with nearby Belmont University, especially in basketball, is a celebrated tradition, highlighting the competitive spirit of the institution.

In recent years, the Bisons’ basketball team has made significant strides, reaching the NIT basketball finals and marking a period of athletic success for the university.
