Lamar University, situated in Beaumont, Texas, is a public institution that joined the Texas State University System in 1995. Previously the main institution within the Lamar University System, it has grown significantly since its inception. As of fall 2022, it boasted an enrollment of over 17,000 students and held accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, a notable figure in Texan history, the university occupies a sprawling urban campus that extends over 299 acres.

Structured into five colleges for undergraduate studies, one for graduate studies, and an honors college, Lamar University provides a broad spectrum of educational opportunities.

Lamar University’s beginnings trace back to 1923 when it became founded as South Park Junior College in the South Park neighborhood of Beaumont. Under the guidance of the South Park School District. The college’s original campus became housed on the top floor of the South Park High School, and it quickly received full accreditation.

Moreover, as the institution evolved to serve a larger region, it was renamed Lamar College in 1932 and became independent of the South Park school district by 1942. After World War II, the college transitioned to a four-year state college and was renamed Lamar State College of Technology in 1949, following a successful legislative campaign led by Jack Brooks and W. R. Cousins Jr. The university continued to grow, eventually establishing branches and expanding its doctoral offerings. The 1960s civil rights movement led to the integration of the university, which had previously been segregated.

Significant expansion and improvement efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have modernized the campus, including new housing facilities and the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center. The university also saw the return of football to its campus in 2010, revitalizing its athletic program.
