Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science
The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) is a prestigious research university, designated as a public deemed university, primarily focusing on basic sciences. It operates under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology of the Indian Government. Founded on July 29, 1876, by Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, the IACS has a longstanding history in pioneering fundamental scientific research. Situated in Jadavpur, South Kolkata, it is in proximity to other renowned institutions like Jadavpur University and the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute.

Covering an area of 9.5 acres, the IACS is currently expanding, with the development of an advanced SMART campus in Baruipur.
The institute is renowned for its contributions in multiple scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biological sciences, and materials sciences, along with mathematical and computational sciences.
The IACS also publishes the Indian Journal of Physics, a monthly scientific journal established in 1926. The journal, distributed globally by Springer, is currently edited by Prof. Subham Majumdar of the IACS.
A significant development is the construction of the Syamaprasad Mukherjee Advanced Research and Training (SMART) campus in Baruipur, initiated by Union Minister Dr. Harsha Vardhan. This new campus is expected to facilitate cutting-edge research across various disciplines, including fundamental and engineering sciences.
In a strategic move to consolidate research efforts, the Indian Government, upon recommendation from the NITI Aayog in 2017, proposed the merger of two premier institutes, the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences and the Bose Institute, with the IACS.

Academically, the IACS organizes its research and educational activities into six major schools, each with its specialized focus. These schools include the School of Applied and Interdisciplinary Sciences, the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Chemical Sciences, the School of Materials Sciences, the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, and the School of Physical Sciences. In addition, the IACS houses several specialized centers for focused research.
The governance structure of the IACS has evolved over time. Initially led by a President, with an Honorary Secretary managing daily operations, the leadership dynamics changed post-Indian independence, with the introduction of the role of Honorary Director, later becoming simply the Director.
Review of University Life and Local Cost at IACS:

University Life: The IACS offers a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment for students and researchers. The campus life is enriched by various academic events, seminars, and workshops, providing ample opportunities for scholarly exchange and networking. The small campus size fosters a close-knit community, encouraging collaboration and interaction among students and faculty.
Local Life?

Kolkata tramway is the only operational tramway in India. It was founded in 1902 as the Calcutta Tramways Company.
Jadavpur, the locality where IACS is situated, is a bustling area in South Kolkata known for its cultural vibrancy and academic atmosphere. The vicinity to other educational and research institutions adds to the academic ambiance. Local amenities, including eateries, markets, and cultural spaces, are abundant, providing a lively and diverse experience for students.
Cost of Living?
Kolkata, being a metropolitan city, has a varying range of living costs. However, compared to other major Indian cities, it is relatively affordable. The cost of living for students in Jadavpur is moderate, with reasonable expenses for housing, food, and transportation. The area offers a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to more comfortable apartments, catering to different financial capabilities.
In summary, the IACS not only stands as a beacon of scientific research but also offers a balanced and enriching academic life in a culturally rich and economically accessible environment.
