In 1976, the Southeastern Regional Black Archives Research Center and Museum was founded at the Carnegie Library. The facility was expanded in 2006 and renamed for United States Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek and Dr. James N. Eaton, founder of the Black Archives. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Jonathan C. Gibbs, a black abolitionist, was instrumental in founding FAMU in 1885. Initially created as the State Normal College for Colored Students, it was part of an educational landscape shaped by racial segregation. The university’s location in Tallahassee was significant due to the area’s large African-American population at the time. FAMU’s campus is on a historic 375-acre land, once a slave plantation.

The institution evolved from a normal school into a land-grant college under the Second Morrill Act in 1891. The 1905 Buckman Act restructured Florida’s education system, solidifying FAMU’s status and leading to its current name in 1953. Despite challenges, including a student strike in 1923 over educational reforms, FAMU persisted, later establishing significant programs in pharmacy and nursing.

The university also played a role in civil rights movements, notably the Tallahassee bus boycott in 1956. FAMU’s reputation in academics was highlighted in the 1990s when it recruited more National Achievement Scholars than Ivy League institutions in certain years.

However, FAMU faced challenges, including a tragic hazing incident in 2011 that led to a student’s death, resulting in administrative resignations and legal repercussions. Recently, FAMU partnered with Adtalem Global Education to enhance educational opportunities.

Academic Excellence and Programs

FAMU offers a wide range of academic programs, including 54 bachelor’s, 29 master’s, and 12 doctoral degrees across its colleges and schools. The university emphasizes high academic standards and innovative programs like the Medical Scholars Program. It also boasts several endowed eminent-scholars chairs across different faculties.
