Eastern Washington University
Let’s dive in!

Eastern Washington University (EWU), a public educational institution, is situated in Cheney, Washington. Additionally, it extends its academic programs to a Spokane-based campus at Riverpoint, along with several other locations across the state.
Established in 1882, EWU is structured into four distinct colleges: the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences; the College of Health Science & Public Health; the College of Professional Programs; and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.
Historical Background Cheney, initially known as Depot Springs, underwent surveying in 1880 near the Northern Pacific Railroad. Benjamin Pierce Cheney, a director on the railroad’s board, led to the town being renamed in his honor by October 1880. He generously donated $10,000 to found the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy in 1882, located at the current site of Showalter Hall. Initially a private institution, the school transitioned to a public entity after Washington joined the union in 1889, becoming the State Normal School at Cheney in 1890, primarily focusing on elementary school teacher training.
The school faced significant setbacks due to fires in 1891 and 1912 but was rebuilt each time. The first fire in 1891 led to the relocation of classes to the Pomeroy building in downtown Cheney. The second major fire in 1912 occurred during Noah D. Showalter’s presidency, after which a substantial appropriation from the state facilitated the construction of a new administration building, later named Showalter Hall.

Julius Zittel designed several buildings for the growing institution, including dormitories and the President’s House. The school evolved over the years, changing its name to Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937 and eventually to Eastern Washington University in 1977. The campus core was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
Campus Locations The primary EWU campus is in Cheney, with a significant presence in Spokane’s Riverpoint Campus. The university also offers programs in Bellevue, Everett, Seattle, Longview, and Vancouver, Washington.
