Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, previously recognized as Uttar Pradesh Technical University before 2015, is a renowned public university situated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Inaugurated by the Uttar Pradesh Government on 8 May 2000, the university initially functioned under one umbrella. However, in 2010, it was split into Gautam Buddh Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University for better administration, only to be reconsolidated under its original form in 2013.
The university boasts a large network, affiliating around 800 colleges. Initially housed on the IET Lucknow campus, it now occupies a spacious, modern campus in Jankipuram, Lucknow. Besides, it maintains a center and regional office in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
Initially founded to provide a boost to technical education in the region, the university offered various programs in engineering, technology, architecture, town planning, pharmacy, and other areas specified by the central government and AICTE. It grew rapidly, increasing from 49 affiliated colleges in 2000 to 785 by 2019.
Moreover, the university conducts central examinations for all its affiliated colleges, ensuring quality and uniformity in academic standards.
One of its key features is its division into five zones, each housing around 150-160 colleges, which aids in management and fosters healthy competition among zones. The university aims to enhance the quality of technical education and research, both in its campus and affiliated institutions. As of 2019, approximately 400,000 students were enrolled in its diverse programs.
