Cleveland State University (CSU), a distinguished public research institution, graces the urban landscape of Cleveland, Ohio. Its roots trace back to 1964 with the establishment of CSU, succeeding Fenn College, a private institution operational since 1923. In 1969, it embraced the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law, enhancing its academic repertoire. As a member of the University System of Ohio, CSU boasts over 120,000 alumni and a broad array of more than 200 academic offerings across eight colleges. The university is recognized for its significant research activities, holding an “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity” classification.

CSU’s journey began with the inception of public education in Cleveland in 1870, spearheaded by the Cleveland YMCA’s free classes. By 1921, these educational efforts culminated in the establishment of the Cleveland YMCA School of Technology, later transforming into Fenn College. Fenn College expanded, acquiring landmarks like Fenn Tower, Stilwell Hall, and Foster Hall.

1964 marked a pivotal year when the State of Ohio acquired Fenn College to create Cleveland State University, a commuter college initially. Industrialist James J. Nance played a crucial role as the inaugural Board of Trustees Chair. By 1997, CSU had grown exponentially, with over 15,000 students, though only a fraction resided on campus.
