Founded by Jesuits from Germany in 1870, Canisius College, now Canisius University, is a private Catholic institution in Buffalo, New York. It’s named in honor of St. Peter Canisius and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The university’s establishment is linked to the Jesuit presence that emerged due to the contested ownership of St. Louis Church in Buffalo back in 1851. St. Michael’s Church, founded by Rev. Lucas Caveng and several families from St. Louis Church, was the forerunner of the university, initially focused on educating the sons of German immigrants. The college and associated high school began in 1870. By 1913, the iconic Old Main building on Main Street was completed, led by a series of German Jesuit presidents.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020, a significant decision by President John Hurley and the board of trustees led to the dismissal of numerous tenured faculty across various departments. This action, which also involved the elimination of several majors, sparked controversy and opposition, including votes of no confidence from the faculty senate and criticism from academic bodies. An investigation by the American Association of University Professors later criticized these actions as part of a trend towards corporatization in higher education.

Canisius College faced scrutiny from the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights in 2015 over its handling of sexual assault and harassment complaints. More controversies arose with lawsuits filed by former student athletes and students against the college for its handling of sexual misconduct allegations and responses to Title XI complaints.

In 2021, Canisius began a transition in leadership, with Steve Stoute succeeding John Hurley as president. The university also achieved a significant milestone by obtaining university designation from the New York State Education Department in April 2023, officially renaming itself Canisius University in August 2023.

The university campus features notable structures such as the Christ the King Chapel, designed by Duane Lyman, and the Science Hall, which was initially a Sears and Roebuck store. Other campus landmarks include the Churchill Academic Tower, the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library, and the Koessler Athletic Center.

Academically, Canisius University is recognized for its diverse range of programs, including newer majors in Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation, Creative Writing, Health and Wellness, and Journalism. The university has been well-ranked in various categories by U.S. News & World Report and is known for its successful athletic teams, particularly in lacrosse, baseball, and softball.

Student life at Canisius is vibrant with numerous clubs and organizations, and the university actively participates in the wider Buffalo community with events and cultural activities. The Golden Griffin, symbolizing courage and strength, is the university’s mascot, a nod to the area’s history and Jesuit heritage.

In conclusion, Greek life at Canisius includes organizations like Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Alpha Kappa Psi, promoting various interests and values. Lastly, the university’s media presence is marked by its student-run newspaper, The Griffin, the Quadrangle magazine, a public-access television cable TV, and the WIRE radio station, contributing to a dynamic campus culture.
