Established in 1855 and situated in Indianapolis, Indiana, Butler University is a distinguished private institution. The university owes its name to its founder, Ovid Butler. It boasts a comprehensive range of academic programs, encompassing over 60 majors across six colleges: the Lacy School of Business, the College of Communication, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Jordan College of the Arts. Butler University’s inception dates back to 1850 when the Indiana General Assembly approved a charter for a new Christian university based on a proposal by Ovid Butler. The university officially opened its doors in 1855 as North-Western Christian University, initially situated at the northeastern fringe of Indianapolis. Although founded under the auspices of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), it operated independently from the church. A significant highlight of its early years was its commitment to providing non-sectarian education and being an early adopter of co-education, admitting both men and women.
