Belhaven University a private evangelical Christian university located in Jackson, Mississippi, was established in 1883. It offers a wide range of academic programs, including traditional majors, general studies, and pre-professional tracks in areas such as Christian Ministry, Medicine, Dentistry, Law, and Nursing.
Historical Background
The university was originally opened as Belhaven College for Young Ladies in 1894 at its present location in Jackson’s historic Belhaven Neighborhood. It was established in the residence of Colonel Jones S. Hamilton, a Confederate veteran who amassed wealth post-war through railroad investments using leased convict labor. The college was named after Hamilton’s mansion, Belhaven, which itself was named after his Scottish ancestral home.
In 1921, under the 33-year leadership of Reverend Guy T. Gillespie, Belhaven first achieved accreditation and initiated scholarship programs. The institution merged with Mississippi Synodical College in 1939, adopting the latter’s 1883 founding date.
A major fire in 1927 destroyed the college’s main building, leaving only the columns that now stand on campus. Significant growth occurred under the subsequent presidents, including the transition to a coeducational institution in 1954, and expansions in faculty and infrastructure.

Throughout its history, Belhaven University has undergone several name changes but has retained the name “Belhaven” throughout. The name transitioned from Belhaven College for Young Ladies to Belhaven Collegiate and Industrial Institute, then to Belhaven College, and finally, in 2010, to Belhaven University.
Belhaven’s strong affiliation with various Presbyterian denominations is reflected in its faculty, student body, and financial support. The university’s curriculum and programs have continually evolved, now offering a range of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees across multiple disciplines.
Academic and Fine Arts Recognition
Belhaven University is recognized for its comprehensive arts programs, being one of only 36 U.S. institutions accredited in all four major arts – Visual Arts, Music, Dance, and Theater. Additionally, it holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and specific accreditations for various departments.
Athletics and Campus Life
The university fields 15 varsity sports teams known as the Blazers, competing in the NCAA Division III, and participates in multiple athletic conferences. The athletic program has achieved notable successes in sports like softball, football, men’s soccer, and men’s tennis.
Belhaven’s campus life, enriched by its Christian values and educational offerings, continues to attract students and faculty committed to academic excellence and spiritual growth.
