Located near the scenic Bosporus, the university was authorized by the Turkish National Assembly and soon after, in February 1998, entered into an academic partnership with San Diego State University, California. BAU began enrolling students in the 1999-2000 academic year, following its inaugural placement exam.

BAU comprises eight faculties, a school of languages, two vocational schools, and four postgraduate institutes. It boasts a student body of 17,048, including undergraduates, graduates, and associate degree students. The campus also features five cafes and restaurants, and a conference hall with a capacity of 1000.

Recognized as a “Superbrand of Turkey” in 2007, BAU extends its educational reach through 35 kindergartens, 18 elementary, 47 high schools, and 177 private educational centers in Turkey. As for its global footprint, BAU operates seven campuses outside Turkey, in the U.S., Canada, Italy, Germany, Georgia, and China. It has forged more than 193 international partnerships, including collaborations with prestigious institutions like Harvard University.

Academically, BAU offers a broad range of programs in law, economics, social sciences, communication, architecture, design, engineering, health sciences, and medicine. It also has a robust graduate school with numerous programs in natural and applied sciences as well as social sciences.

The CO-OP Program at BAU is a distinctive feature, merging academic learning with practical work experience. This program involves over 1500 local and international partners.

Living in Istanbul, where BAU is located, presents a vibrant mix of cultural, historical, and modern experiences. The city’s cost of living is relatively moderate compared to other major global cities. Accommodation options range from affordable student dormitories to higher-priced apartments. The city offers a diverse culinary scene, efficient public transportation, and numerous historical and cultural attractions, making it an enriching environment for students. However, students should be mindful of the cost variations within different districts of Istanbul. Overall, BAU students experience a blend of academic rigor and cultural immersion in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
