Bill Trauth Jr., Legendary NYC Buckley Wrestling Coach and Camp Director, Passes Away

It is with deep sorrow and immense respect that we announce the passing of Bill Trauth Jr.

Moreover, a towering figure in the world of wrestling and a beloved camp director, who left an indelible mark on the Buckley School and the Wild Goose Camp for Boys in Maine.

Bill Trauth Jr., whose legacy in wrestling is intertwined with that of his father, Bill Trauth Sr., transformed the Buckley School’s wrestling program into a powerhouse, revered across the East Coast.

Furthermore, under his guidance, Buckley clinched an astounding 23 wrestling league championships. A feat that earned him a coveted spot in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section.

His father, Bill Trauth Sr., not only coached at Buckley School but also served as the director of Wild Goose Camp, laying the foundations of excellence that his son would later build upon. Together, they turned Buckley into more than just a school with a strong wrestling program. A breeding ground for athletes who were as mentally robust as they were physically.

Bill Trauth Jr.’s impact went beyond mere coaching. As a camp director, he nurtured young minds, instilling in them values of perseverance, resilience, and the importance of working through pain. His teachings were not just about wrestling but about life, shaping generations of individuals who carried these lessons well beyond the mat.

High school coaches highly coveted Buckley wrestlers, a testament to Trauth Jr.’s exceptional coaching skills and his ability to bring out the best in his students. He taught them what it meant to be a Buckley boy – it wasn’t just about winning but about the will to keep working, even when in pain.

Buckley School & Deerfield Academy alumnus James Tierney Tang said of Coach Trauth:

“I was always the smallest boy in my Buckley class from the age of five onward. Coach Trauth encouraged me to not only exceed and succeed in sports; but also to be confident and secure with myself as a person. He was a mentor for life.”

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his teachings, his spirit, and his legacy will continue to inspire. Bill Trauth Jr. was not just a coach or a camp director; he was a mentor, a role model, and a pillar in the communities he touched. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his remarkable journey.

“Remembered not just for the matches won but for the lives he shaped, Bill Trauth Jr.’s legacy is etched in the hearts and minds of many, a testament to a life extraordinarily lived and a mission fulfilled.”
