Obituary for Cameron Stout

The Pfeiffer University community is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Cameron Stout, who tragically lost his life in a single-car accident on May 19. Cameron, a rising junior from Salisbury, North Carolina, was a dedicated student majoring in Health and Physical Education and lived on campus.

Cameron was a standout athlete at Salisbury High School, where he played varsity basketball. At Pfeiffer, he was known for his kindness, compassion, and strong aspiration to become a teacher. Ellen Blue, a professor of education, fondly remembered him as an eager and polite student. “He wasn’t given the time on Earth to shine his light fully,” Blue said. “Cam had a teacher’s heart and understood the value of education. He would have been an amazing teacher.”

Dr. Dawn Lucas, the dean of the undergraduate college and professor of education, worked closely with Cameron in her Health Promotion and Life Skills course. She highlighted his commitment to making a difference, particularly through a project focused on creating a safe and bully-free environment for children at the J.F. Hurley YMCA after-school program. Reflecting on his experience, Cameron noted how a child’s life could become significantly improved. When their personal situation becomes understood and addressed.

Cameron’s passion for positively impacting young lives extended beyond the classroom. Nasya Evans, a classmate from both Salisbury High School and Pfeiffer University, shared that Cameron actively participated in youth basketball camps and always aimed to encourage and support young kids. On the basketball court, teammate Doug Smith remembered Cameron as an encouraging and dedicated player, known for his hard work and sense of humor. Miles Davis, Cameron’s roommate, cherished his consistent kindness and camaraderie.

Dr. Scott Bullard, president of Pfeiffer University, expressed the collective grief of the community. “Cam, by all accounts, was a kind and caring person who wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. His deep concern for children and his commitment to being a mentor and role model would have made him a truly exceptional teacher,” Bullard said. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss.”

Pfeiffer University plans to hold a memorial service for Cameron in August, coinciding with the return of students for the fall semester. Additional service details have yet to become announced.

Cameron Stout’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and passion for education and sports will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
