Whether we are doing a lot of commuting or we are heading on many road trips, our car is the critical component to ensure that we get anywhere in one piece, therefore we must look after it properly. However, we must remember that it is we who are responsible for the overall quality of the journey. It sounds incredibly obvious, but if we are not running at our optimum, this can be very detrimental to ourselves and our passengers. 

Focus is one of those things that we’re all complaining about all too often, especially those that have had Covid, or people that are still feeling like they’re running on empty because of life pressures. Therefore, it’s crucial we all learn to be more focused drivers. How can we do this? 

Putting the Phone Away

It’s hard to argue with the facts, especially when people admit to spending 13 minutes a day on their phones while they are driving! Therefore, if we don’t set an example, our children are going to grow up thinking that they don’t need to pay attention to the road properly, which is a very terrible habit that many younger drivers are already guilty of. 

Avoid Multitasking

Research has shown countless times that multitasking is not productive in any way, yet we continue to multitask in every part of our lives, even while we are on the road! It can be easy for us all to think that we are okay to multitask for a second because we are at traffic lights or we’re on a clear bit of the road, but the fact is this mindset is not conducive to being safe. 

Multitasking is just another form of distracted driving. If you think you can get away with texting or grabbing something in the glove box while doing 50 mph, this is why you’ve got to stop multitasking and make sure that you get everything in place before you head off. 

The problem we all have as drivers is when we go on the same roads, we end up on autopilot, and this means we are not focusing on the road. Multitasking is not useful outside of the car, and it’s definitely not useful inside. 

Learn How to Concentrate

It sounds very simple, but in order to make sure that you are concentrating properly, you have to train your ability to concentrate. Driving involves taking your attention from the mirrors to the road in front of you and operating the vehicle itself, three separate components. Therefore, you’ve got to fine-tune that concentration, especially if you are not sleeping very well.

You may have a lengthy commute, or you may believe that you’re going to hit certain spots of traffic so you have the opportunity to get yourself ready while in the car, but this is an incredibly foolish mindset to be in. Finish your morning routine and get everything in place before you step into that car. 

Navigate Your Route Before Leaving

A lot of people have the same route every day, which means they end up going on autopilot, but it’s critical for the sake of our concentration when we are doing longer journeys to have an idea of where we’re going and how we are getting there, especially on long road trips. 

One of the biggest mistakes people make while they are driving is making adjustments to their GPS or looking at directions while on the move. It’s critical to pull over if you ever need to make any adjustments, rather than doing it on the road and hoping for the best. 

Preparation is essential for the sake of our focus before we head off. Any little distraction is going to take your attention off the road, and all it takes is a split second for an accident to occur when you’re not paying attention. 

Avoiding Drowsiness

You may have had a bad night’s sleep, or you’ve been on the road for a long time to ensure that you are alert in the right way. Some people benefit from having a coffee, but if you are someone who finds you have jitters after caffeine, running the air conditioning or the fan can reduce drowsiness. Rolling the windows down to keep the air circulating in the vehicle, and the extra noise can help snap you out of your drowsiness. 

People talk about the hypnotic state of the road, which is why you’ve got to have your wits about you and recognize that you need to take breaks where necessary. 

Keeping Conversations Light

If you want to be focused on the road, you should not necessarily have detailed conversations. In-depth conversations are something that’s best left outside of the vehicle, primarily for the reason that you may start to stir up emotions. 

When you start to feel emotional about the subject, you can get stressed and get distracted as a result. Having conversations in the car is perfectly acceptable, and it can even help you to stay alert, but lighter conversations will be far more effective. 

Being a focused driver is not something we always pay attention to, pardon the pun, but we have to remember that if we are going on long journeys or have hit driver autopilot to a detrimental level, some of these tips can make a massive difference.
