A Border Conflict In The Decades Long “Frozen War”
Azerbaijan Armenia Conflict April 2-5, 2016 – a brief confrontation between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The idea of Azerbaijan was to capture the key heights on the Armenian border, despite a defense of Armenian troops.
During the operation Azerbaijan T-72 tanks fought with Armenian armor.
As reported by Azerbaijan 14 Armenian T-72 were destroyed, plus 4 BMP vehicles.
Furthermore, Armenia accepted the loss of 11 T-72 tanks. In addition, 6 BMPs and declared 25 Azerbaijan armored vehicles including 14 tanks have been hit.
Azerbaijan accepted a loss of one T-72 blown by a land mine and one Mi-24 helicopter shot down by RPG flying very low over Armenian positions.
Moreover, more than a half of the Armenian armor was destroyed by an anti-tank teams using Israeli Spike ATGMs supported by Israeli drones.
An interesting fact – this this was the first reported operational use of IAI Harop suicide drones that successfully attacked and destroyed 7 targets including the battery of 152mm 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzers.
There is no strong evidence on all of the losses and as usual each side claimed the other one suffered more and used basically the same images to support it.
In conclusion, the fact is that this operation resulted in Azerbaijan forces accomplishing all of their tasks.
Moreover, Azerbaijan took strategic Armenian strongholds. In addition, with relatively few casualties.
