Rebellion Research Names Arkin Gupta of Citadel as the 2025 Machine Learning Mind of the Year
Rebellion Research has named Arkin Gupta of Citadel and one of Wall Street’s leading young quants, as the 2025 Machine Learning Mind of the Year.
Arkin’s research has bridged theory and practice in exceptional ways. His recent papers, including Prediction-Enhanced Monte Carlo: A Machine Learning View on Control Variate (arXiv:2412.11257), advance the use of predictive models to improve simulation accuracy and efficiency—a technique with wide applications across quantitative finance and scientific computing. His earlier academic work, such as Identifying Steady State in the Network Dynamics of Spiking Neural Networks (Heliyon, 2023) and Learning Without Gradient Descent Encoded by the Dynamics of a Neurobiological Model, explored the mathematical and biological underpinnings of how neural systems learn and adapt—foreshadowing his current contributions at the frontier of financial machine learning.

Gupta, also a Crain’s New York Business 40 Under 40 honoree, is recognized for his exceptional contributions to the intersection of machine learning, quantitative finance, and risk modeling.
Before joining Citadel, Gupta held several distinguished roles at top financial institutions. At Morgan Stanley, he served in the Central Risk Book group, advancing from Associate to Vice President, where he focused on quantitative research, trading, and portfolio management.
Prior to that, Gupta worked as a Quantitative Researcher at Cubist Systematic Strategies, specializing in alpha research and risk modeling for mid-frequency equity statistical arbitrage. He also contributed to BlackRock’s event-driven equity strategies and liquidity research for index rebalances, following his earlier research experience at UC San Diego’s Mathematical Neuroscience Lab, where he built neurobiological machine learning models.
Gupta holds a Master’s in Operations Research from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Computer Science from UC San Diego. His academic and professional path reflects a deep commitment to merging theory with market application.
Among his standout contributions is his talk, “The Landscape of Risk Models in Equities,” which explores how deep learning is reshaping traditional factor and statistical risk models. Gupta’s balanced approach—valuing both interpretability and predictive power—has made him a sought-after thought leader in modern quantitative investing.
Rebellion Research celebrates Arkin Gupta not only for his technical brilliance but for his forward-thinking vision in applying machine learning to real-world financial challenges. His work exemplifies the innovative spirit driving the next generation of quant finance.
