At Columbia University in New York, controversy has erupted following remarks made by Professor Joseph Massad in relation to the October 7 Hamas-led acts of terrorism. Massad, an expert on modern Arab politics and intellectual history, garnered widespread attention and criticism for describing these acts, which resulted in the death of over 1,300 Israeli residents, as “astonishing,” “astounding,” “awesome,” and “incredible.” He further labeled this tragedy as “the stunning victory of the Palestinian resistance” against “cruel colonizers.”

Massad’s remarks have led to intense backlash, with more than 50,000 individuals signing a petition demanding his removal from the university’s faculty. The petition, initiated by Maya Platek, a 23-year-old student and former student body president at Columbia. In her petition, Platek emphasized Massad’s refusal to condemn Hamas, a widely recognized terrorist organization, for its devastating actions.

Joseph Massad, of Jordanian-Palestinian descent, has become affiliated with Columbia University since 1999. In addition, holds a tenured position. His academic contributions have focused on modern Arab politics, and he has been notably active in supporting pro-Palestinian activities within the university community. Over the years, he has also participated in various protests against Israel.

In a surprising turn of events, the petition seeking Massad’s dismissal became taken down. Visitors to the site were met with a message stating, “This petition is not accessible at the moment. It may be under review by moderators who enforce our Community Guidelines. This petition may become available again once the review process is complete. We appreciate your patience.”

In response to the outcry against Massad, a counter-petition has become launched in his defense. Many from the Columbia community, including students, faculty, alumni, and other supporters, have expressed their unwavering solidarity with the professor. The support petition reads, “We, the undersigned, express unwavering solidarity with Professor Massad, whose conscientious teaching and research on Palestine, the Middle East, and the Global South have earned our unending admiration for over two decades.”

The situation at Columbia underscores the complexities and sensitivities of addressing political issues within academic settings, highlighting the ongoing debate over academic freedom and the responsibilities of educators. And of course the extreme hatred of Israel fostered by uber wokeness on Columbia and other campuses across America.
