Two people who lost their lives in a two-car crash at the intersection of Veteran’s Parkway and West Jefferson Street in Springfield have been identified by authorities. Anthony Carroll, 40, of Springfield, died at the scene of the crash before he could be transported to the hospital. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed that Carroll died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Christian Markey, 28, also of Springfield, passed away in the emergency room of Springfield Memorial Hospital shortly after arriving. He too succumbed to injuries from the crash.

The Illinois State Police responded to the incident late Monday night. According to the police, Carroll was driving a Buick Allure and had been stopped at a red light while traveling south on Illinois 4 at Jefferson Street when his vehicle was rear-ended by a Hyundai Accent driven by Markey. The impact caused the Buick to catch fire following the crash.

Both deaths remain under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police as authorities work to gather more details on the tragic accident.
