Andrew Left is an activist short seller and the founder of Citron Research, one of the longest-running online stock commentary platforms focused on investigative short-selling research. For more than two decades, Left has built a reputation as one of the most visible and controversial figures in modern equity markets, publishing research reports that challenge corporate valuations, business models, and accounting practices.

Founded in 2001 as StockLemon.com and later rebranded as Citron Research, the firm has produced more than 150 investigative reports. Citron’s stated mission has been to present research-driven analysis to the investing public in an accessible format, encouraging readers to conduct their own due diligence and seek professional advice. Over the years, many companies covered in Citron reports experienced significant stock price declines, and numerous targets later faced regulatory investigations, delistings, or bankruptcies.

Left has been widely quoted across major financial media, including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Barron’s, CNBC, Bloomberg, and Investors’ Business Daily. In 2017, The New York Times referred to him as “The Bounty Hunter of Wall Street,” highlighting his role in exposing companies he believed to be overvalued or engaged in misconduct.

Throughout his career, Left has targeted both small-cap companies and large public firms, including S&P 500 constituents. Some of his most high-profile reports involved companies such as Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Shopify, Longtop Financial, and Evergrande Group. Citron’s analysis has often led to sharp market reactions, regulatory scrutiny, and intense public debate.

Citron’s research has also generated legal and regulatory challenges. In 2016, the Hong Kong Market Misconduct Tribunal barred Left from trading in Hong Kong markets for five years over findings related to a report on Evergrande Group. Although Evergrande later experienced financial distress, the ruling remained in place. In July 2024, U.S. federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against Left alleging securities fraud and market manipulation, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a parallel civil lawsuit. Left has denied wrongdoing, and those matters remain part of ongoing legal proceedings.

Before founding Citron, Left worked in commodities sales early in his career. He later transitioned into short selling full-time, publishing independent research focused on identifying what he described as promotional schemes, accounting irregularities, and structurally flawed business models.

In addition to his investment work, Left has participated as a speaker at major finance conferences, including events at Harvard Business School. He has also engaged in philanthropic initiatives, including funding scholarships for students affected by the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy.

Andrew Left remains one of the most recognized activist short sellers in global markets, known for his willingness to publicly challenge companies and spark debate over valuation, transparency, and corporate governance.
