Cold Case Breakthrough: Victim Identified After 22 Years

In a significant development, DNA technology has led to the identification of skeletal remains found over two decades ago in Charlotte County.

On January 6, 2002, the remains of an unidentified man discovered in the bushes along Zemel Road, near the South Charlotte County landfill. Alongside the remains, a Bulova watch also recovered. An autopsy determined the man was a victim of homicide, but his identity remained a mystery until now.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Team has now identified the victim as Alejandro Narciso Lago, a Cuban male born on October 31, 1957, in Miami-Dade County. Lago last seen in Miami on November 17, 2001, and reported missing by his mother on December 27, 2001.

Currently, the Cold Case Team now conducts thorough background checks on Lago to understand his habits and activities.

Recently, detectives traveled to Miami to collaborate with local missing persons detectives to gather more information about Lago and his acquaintances.

As of now, there is no clear reason why Lago was in the Charlotte/Lee County area. The investigation continues as detectives explore all possible leads. A tip suggested that in late 2001, local males from Punta Gorda became involved in a physical altercation with a man in South Charlotte County. The tipster claimed the man became killed and his body disposed of, though it is uncertain if this pertains to Lago’s case.

Zemel Road, located near the Charlotte/Lee County line. Moreover, has historically become a site where bodies from the Fort Myers dumped.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell emphasized the importance of this identification in moving the case forward:

“Identifying the victim is a major step toward bringing closure to his loved ones, but there is still a lot of work to be done in this investigation. Understanding why he was in our county could be crucial to finding his killer and bringing them to justice. Lastly, if anyone has any information, even the tiniest detail can be a critical piece of evidence. I know that my Cold Case team is the best in the field, and they will follow every actionable lead to the end.”

In conclusion, the Cold Case Detectives urge anyone with information to contact them via the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at (941) 639-2101.
