2023 Market Wrap Poem by Erin Riley
Tis the last week of the year,
And night’s shade is long,
An apt time to reflect on,
What went right and wrong
Markets stepped out of the gates
Shaky of standing
While the crowd argued over
A hard or soft landing
We grumbled over it being
Too tricky to call
But all agreed that credit
Was belle of this ball
And cash rode in on white horse-
Return of the king-
As we watched what the final
Of Succession did bring
A bank failed in the valley
Under venture stampede,
While we all sought out answers
From chat-GPT
Nvidia cashed its chips
And soared to stock heaven,
Leading what became known as
The magnificent seven
Everyone else sobered up
And made moves to get thin,
Reductions in workforce
And Ozempic were “in”
But in spite of high mortgages
People continued to spend,
Which caused us to wonder
Just how will this end?
Rates and temperatures alike,
Both stayed on a heater
While Barbenheimer brought us
Back to the theater
On venture! On fundraise!
That whip crack was spurned,
But despite some big mark downs
I-P-Os returned
Inflation cooled down at last
The Dow hit a high,
And Sam was shuffled round,
At OpenAI
A Cybertruck hit the road,
The future is here,
But swift with its arrival,
Comes reason to fear
It’s not a large language model
That wakes me at night,
Although this poem’s writer
Has that rival in sight
What I do want to mention
Is the lives at stake
Due to violence and hatred
For power’s own sake
As the days dash and dash on
To twenty-twenty-four,
Let’s intend that humanity
Raises peace to the fore
